Meteorologist

Responsibilities
Forming weather views for various European regions
Presentation of weather information to energy traders and other stakeholders
Publications via internal information channels, e.g. Intranet
Share knowledge in the meteorological area
Close cooperation with other market analysts, e.g. hydrology, power and gas analysis
Develop meteorological products and services for the traders and stakeholders
Develop and maintain forecasting tools, methods, systems and applications
Managing meteorological information and data

Qualifications
Bachelor or Master Degree in meteorology
Experience in operational European weather forecasting for at least 3-5 years
Familiar with medium to long range weather forecasts
Experience in applied statistics an advantage
Preferably experience in geo sciences like hydrology

Meteorologist


Weather has a significant impact on the physical side of the energy sector:
• Temperature and nebulosity govern the demand for electricity
• Temperature governs the demand for natural gas and fuel oil
• Precipitation determines the amount of hydropower production
• The electricity generation from wind turbines is increasing day by day
• Extreme weather events can cause severe electricity supply disruptions
• Weather has a impact on CO2-emissions
Weather events and trends translate into price movements in the energy commodity markets. Therefore, understanding and predicting the impact of the weather on energy prices is crucial for our Trading and Portfolio Management activities.

Mission

You will be responsible for:
• Short- and medium range consensus forecasts for Central Western Europe, Southern Europe, United Kingdom based on e.g. the ECMWF and the GFS model runs
• The follow-up of long range and seasonal forecasting developments
• The development of weather scenarios to be used in price forecasting models
• The participation to model development, e.g. related to wind generation, gas and power short-term price simulation

Qualifications

• You have a master degree. Experience is not required
• You are fluent in English
• We are primarily looking for meteorologists with some forecasting experience, but candidates with a background from research and related fields (e.g. oceanography) will also be considered
• No previous experience in the energy sector is required, but you should be interested in learning how the energy commodity markets are functioning and how prices are formed in these markets
