Synoptic Situation

Current Weather Summary and Future Developments:
A weak, slow moving trough is located over the Top End, while a high near
Tasmania extends a weakening ridge through central Australia. In the north,
light winds with moist unstable conditions will continue to cause isolated
showers and storms. In the south, becoming warmer ahead of a trough forming over
Western Australia with isolated showers and storms developing over the western
border late tomorrow.

Forecast Discussion
Short term...
In the north, humid and unstable with convection continuing, though north of
Elliott. One last day of light W/SW'ly steering means showers and storms slow
moving. Easterly steering returns to the Top End late in the week. To the south,
partly cloudy and beginning to become hotter. Moisture increases down the
western border tomorrow with showers and storms developing late in the day in a
NW/NE convergence ahead of the trough in WA. Dry air remains over the eastern
ASD and with winds increasing will give FDIs near 50.

Long Term...
Showers and storms across the Top End and northern VRD as drier S'ly flow
extends northwards. In the south, showers and storms extending east as the
moisture feeding down the western border extends into central parts of the ASD.
Temperatures increasing into the weekend with max temps reaching low 40s. The
trough moves into the southwest ASD on Friday with NW winds becoming fresh and
gusty ahead of it. A cooler southeasterly change will follow the trough, but
relief from the high max temps will be only slight as temps drop to the mid 30s.
With no upper support patchy areas of rain developing on and behind the trough
with the most unstable areas being ahead of the trough in the NW/NE convergence.

Synoptic Situation

Current Weather Summary and Future Developments:
A weak monsoon trough located near the north coast of the Top End is moving
north into the Arafura Sea, with a tropical low forming in the monsoon trough.
The low is expected to develop further over the next few days. Scattered showers
and gusty storms across the Top End will increase further during the week, with
areas of rain and isolated heavy falls developing closer to the north coast. In
the south, showers and storms extending throughout by Wednesday ahead of a
trough approaching from the west. Becoming sunny over the southern half from
Thursday as the trough moves northwards through the Territory.

Forecast Discussion
Short term...
Light winds over the Top End as the developing monsoon trough near the north
coast moves into the Arafura Sea in the next 12 to 24 hours in response to a
deep SE'ly surge from a middle level ridge building over central Australia and
amplification of a strong mid level trough over E Australia. A weak low has
formed near Gove but uncertain at this stage whether a new low develops within
the monsoon trough tonight in the Arafura Sea or this low moves north tomorrow
and develops. Active showers and storms, mostly diurnal over the Top End and
Gulf Country. Storms will be gusty with possible squall lines as the steering
increases. Isolated heavy falls are likely due to high precipitable water.

To the south, sunny over the southeastern ASD today with isolated showers and
storms elsewhere. A trough approaching from the west will see showers and storms
near the western border extending throughout on Wednesday.

Long Term...
The low in the Arafura Sea develops further in response to a W'ly surge and a SE
surge from southeast as another low deepens in the Coral Sea. The low may reach
tropical cyclone strength by Friday, though a range of model movements and
development scenarios exist. Will need to monitor to get timing right for
issuing wind warnings, advices. A flood threat advice has been issued for
Thurs/Fri. Showers and gusty storms becoming more frequent over the Top End,
with areas of rain and heavy falls closer to the north coast.

In the south, SH/TS contracts north of the ASD on Thursday, and north of Renner
Springs on Friday as a deep dry S/SE flow develops to the west of the amplifying
mid level trough over E Australia. A weak ridge at the sfc from Friday will
maintain a warm to hot E/NE flow in the south going into the weekend.

Darwin 4 Day Forecast...
Shower/storms, becoming difficult to pick fine breaks. SE steering picks up
again over next day or so, storms becoming gusty. Activity on the increase as
the monsoon trough develops to north.

Showers, with gusty storms mainly during the afternoon and evening. Light to
moderate northeast to southeast winds.
